Malvern Hills District Council continue support for Ukraine

Malvern Hills District Council has employed two liaison officers as part of its commitment to supporting people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The council is working with partner organisations and will be supporting up to 313 Ukrainian guests, as well as the sponsors accommodating them under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme.

The Ukraine Liaison Officers, Olha and Tanya, have been employed to provide help to Ukrainian individuals and families forced to leave their homes because of the war.

They will act as a liaison between Ukrainian guests and services provided by the council and Worcestershire County Council, as well as the NHS, Department for Work and Pensions and other voluntary and community organisations.

They will also provide information and support in matters related to housing and to promote the development of good relations in the community.

Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC) has provided support in the following ways:

  • Paid out £40,200 in welcome payments to 201 guests that have arrived to Malvern so far.
  • Created the Malvern Hills guide which has information about the local area, schools, health services and more (available in Ukrainian and English).
  • English classes in community settings
  • Community events to welcome guests
  • Support with accessing transport and jobs/benefits
  • Carried out accommodation checks and rehousing guests in need
  • Connecting guests to community support with mental health and basic needs
  • Special deals with Freedom Leisure

Tanya Averina, Ukraine Liaison Officer at MHDC, said: "We were forced to leave our homeland to escape the war started by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. Our mission is to help every Ukrainian and every Ukrainian family, extending a helping hand to those who were forced to leave their homes because of the war, or were left without a home at all and arrived in the Malvern Hills area. We have walked the same path, so we understand the needs and share the difficulties they have to face, but we are here to support and help".

Cllr Tom Wells, Leader of MHDC, said: "We are committed to helping those who have been forced to flee the war in Ukraine and we are so thankful to the community for their ongoing support. The Ukraine Liaison Officers are here to provide a familiar, helping hand to guests staying in the Malvern Hills District. There is also a wealth of information available on the council website".
